The Durban Chess Club is open to any member of the general public
in Durban. It provides its members with the opportunity of playing
competitive chess against some of the best players in Durban.
Details of planned Club events can be found on the club's Whats App
newsgroup. To join this group, please contact Jerry (082 731 9430).
A new club committee was elected on 15th February 2024 by the members, to hold office until
the 2024 Annual General Meeting is held. At this meeting, Jerry Zuma was elected as Chairman,
John Khan as his Deputy, Ahdir Puran as Secretary, and Keith Rust as Treasurer. Here are the
minutes and attendance register.
The Club usually meets every week from about 6.30 pm to about 10.00 pm on
Thursdays, at the Saint Cyprian's Church hall in Umbilo Road. From the
corner of Umbilo Road and Rick Turner (Francois) Road proceed along
the right hand side of Umbilo Road past Hannah Road and past Pioneer Road.
Look for the AFM Cleantech sign on the left hand side of the road, and
the church hall is in the cul-de-sac on the right of Umbilo Road.
Any interested chess player is welcome to attend the Club for a few evenings
to play social chess, before deciding whether to join as a member.
The club submits the results of games played in its major tournaments to CHESS SA
(the national organising body of chess in South Africa) for rating purposes.
The club's annual membership fees have not yet been decided by the new committee. In the
past, these fees were R400 for both adult and junior members, with a 25% discount for
additional family memberships. Note that club membership fees do NOT include the
cost of CHESS SA membership.
